"In the Service of Madness," one of the most radical and impactful works in Japanese cinema, tells the story of an elderly janitor working in a mental hospital who confronts his wife, who is a patient there, and his own past. However, Teinosuke Kinugasa's film transcends the boundaries of a traditional narrative. Influenced by the writer Yasunari Kawabata and the avant-garde art group Shinkankaku [New Perception], the film constantly blurs the lines between reality and madness, memory and dreams, through fragmented narratives, rapid camera movements, superimpositions, distorted images, and rhythmic editing. This film, which was considered lost for a long time and rediscovered years later,
"Delirium Discovered," now considered one of the masterpieces of Japanese avant-garde cinema, continues to be celebrated today.
