This six-week seminar series will explore all aspects of the development of video art, examining its evolution through significant works in art history and contemporary video art practices.

The seminar, offered at a discounted rate for participants under 24 and over 65, will explore the relationship between video works and other mediums and practices, as well as their connections to concepts such as time, space, and the body. It will discuss how these connections transform perceptual and emotional experiences, along with their potential consequences. The seminar will emphasize that video is not only a visual and auditory means of expression, but also a platform that intersects different disciplines and enables conceptual thinking.

The seminar aims to provide a focused exploration of different facets of video art. It will cover a wide range of topics, from how television was initially utilized in early video works, to the ways in which video transforms our perception of time and space, and its use as a political or performative tool. In doing so, the seminar will examine video not just as a singular form of expression, but as a multifaceted artistic medium with diverse functions and meanings.

This seminar series, which will explore various video works, will focus on concepts such as transmedia, simultaneity, performativity, and contemporaneity, while also highlighting the relationships between them.

The seminar will be conducted in Turkish.

Hasan Cem Çal (1994, Istanbul) After completing his undergraduate degree in Cinema and Television at Istanbul Bilgi University, he went on to earn a Master's degree in Philosophy and Social Thought at the same university. He has written articles on a wide range of topics, including film, video, and video games, and has published them in various print and online media. His writings on contemporary art have appeared in publications by Salt, Arter, Borusan Contemporary, and İKSV. He has given talks at cultural and artistic institutions such as Kıraathane Istanbul Literature House, Yermekân, Eldem Art Space, the Goethe-Institut, and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. He has also presented papers at academic events such as the Turkish Phenomenology Conference, the Cumhuriyet and Communication Symposium (CİSEM), the National Sociology Congress, the Mediterranean Aesthetics Congress, and the Conference on New Directions in Turkish Film Studies. Together with Serdar Kökçeoğlu, he organized events in various cities, both domestically and internationally, as part of the "Conversations on 21st Century Cinema" mobile interview series. He curated the monthly film program "Contemporary Turkish Cinema" at Eldem Art Space. He was a visiting researcher at the Harun Farocki Institut in 2025 and at the Julia Stoschek Foundation in 2026. Çal is also part of the editorial team at Manifold and co-hosts the Wax Podcast, which features in-depth analyses of films. He has also published with Akademim Yayınları. Ludology: Essays on Video Games. He has a book titled "[Book Title]". Hasan Cem Çal, who is currently pursuing his doctoral studies in the Communication Sciences PhD program at Kadir Has University, conducts research in areas such as film philosophy, experimental film and video, media theory, video games, and expanded cinema.
