The slope where Altındağ meets Keçiören is Ankara's most generous corner for a day with children. Begin with hands-on learning at Feza Gürsey, picnic around the pond in Altınpark, ride the cable car up from Keçiören Botanical Park and watch the sunset from the fairy-tale bastions of Estergon Castle. If energy remains, and with children it usually does, the funfair at Gençlik Park is waiting in the evening.

1
Feza Gürsey Bilim Merkezi

Feza Gürsey Science Center.

~1 h 15 min here
Altınpark içi, Aydınlıkevler, Altındağ

Arrive near opening; get the planetarium session time at the desk straight away, seats go fast.

This centre inside Altınpark opened in 1993 as Turkey's first science centre and takes its name from the physicist Feza Gürsey. Hands-on physics, optics and mechanics exhibits, planetarium shows and weekend workshops are exactly what children aged 6 to 14 love. Admission is nominal and a visit takes ninety minutes to two hours; do not be surprised if your child refuses to leave.

Altınpark

Altınpark.

~1 h here
İrfan Baştuğ Caddesi, Aydınlıkevler, Altındağ

Picnic by the pond or have lunch at the cafe. After the playgrounds, take a short loop around the water.

Opened in 1991 on a former golf course, the 64-hectare Altınpark is one of Ankara's biggest urban parks, with a pond, an open-air cinema area, exhibition halls, cafes and long walking paths. The Feza Gürsey Science Centre and the fairground inside make it easy to build a full day for a family with children. It sits on the Keçiören border, so you can add Estergon Castle to the same day.
3
Keçiören Botanik Parkı ve Teleferik

Keçiören Botanical Park and Cable Car.

~30 min here
Botanik Parkı, Kalaba–Etlik yamacı, Keçiören

Cross to the neighbouring park; the cable car opens at 13:00 at weekends, and the greenhouses and waterfall fill the wait.

This hillside park next to Altınpark has greenhouses, a waterfall and flower beds, and the sightseeing cable car that leaves from here shows you the skyline of northern Ankara on the way up to Atatürk Park on the ridge. It is a weekend treat rather than transport; tickets are nominal and children adore it. With the Yenimahalle–Şentepe line closed, this is the only cable car still running in Ankara.
4
Estergon Kalesi Türk Kültür Merkezi

Estergon Castle Turkish Cultural Center.

~1 h 30 min here
Güçlükaya Mahallesi, Estergon Kalesi Sokak, Keçiören

Ten minutes by car or taxi; bastions, exhibitions and evening lights. Children may think the castle is real; no need to spoil it.

If you spot a Hungarian-looking castle on a hilltop in Keçiören, your eyes are not deceiving you; the municipality built this cultural centre in 2005 modelled on Esztergom Castle. Inside are exhibitions on Turkish history, craft workshops, a cafe and a restaurant. It is not a historic castle, but the bastions give a wide view over Keçiören and northern Ankara, and it is pleasant when lit at night. For children it is playground and fairy-tale set in one.
5
Gençlik Parkı

Youth Park.

~45 min here
Atatürk Bulvarı, Ulus–Sıhhiye arası, Altındağ

Back to Ulus; buy funfair tokens, and while you have tea by the pool they take the big wheel.

Opened in 1943, Gençlik Park was the first large green space the Republic gave the people of its capital, and the big pool and fountains at its centre appear in every old photograph of Ankara. Today it combines a funfair, tea gardens, a cultural centre and walking paths where families stroll in the cool of the evening. It sits at the Ulus metro exit, right between the railway station and the Opera, and is the perfect place to put your feet up at the end of an Ulus walk.
