1. Meshes of the Afternoon
Director: Maya Deren, Alexander Hammid
Screenplay: Maya Deren
Cast: Maya Deren, Alexander Hammid
USA / 1943 / 14 min / Black and White / DCP / Silent
"Meshes of the Afternoon," Maya Deren's first film, created in collaboration with her then-partner Alexander Hammid, emerged from the unsettling atmosphere of World War II and has become one of the pioneering and most inspiring examples of avant-garde cinema. Deren, uninterested in Hollywood's realistic narrative conventions, creates an unsettling dream world in her subsequent films, filled with symbolism, cyclical structures, repetition, and duality. In this dialogue-free and silent world, created solely through the possibilities of the camera, Deren also appears in front of the camera.
2. Ritual in Transfigured Time
Director: Maya Deren
Screenplay: Maya Deren
Cast: Rita Christiani, Maya Deren, Anaïs Nin, Frank Westbrook, Gore Vidal
USA / 1946 / 15 min / Black and White / DCP / Silent
"Ritual in Transfigured Time" transforms time through its fragmented structure, as well as by using slow-motion and freeze-frame techniques; it brings together dance and cinema in a unique way. Maya Deren, deeply interested in dance and ritual practices, transforms everyday rituals such as unraveling a woolen thread and greeting into a performance with a constantly changing rhythm. Frozen images, sculptures, and bodies gain new meanings through movement.
3. The Very Eye of Night
Director: Maya Deren
Screenplay: Maya Deren
Cast: Don Freisinger, Richard Sandifer, Patricia Ferrier, Bud Bready, Genaro Gomez, Barbara Levin, Richard Englund, Rosemary Williams, Phillip Salem
USA / 1955 / 15 min / Black and White / DCP / Silent
"The Very Eye of Night," Deren's "completed" final film, was created in collaboration with choreographer Antony Tudor and students from the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. A notable feature of the film is the negative image technique, which gives the impression that the dancers' bodies are floating in space, free from spatial references.
