"Lenny" is a unique biographical film in which Dustin Hoffman portrays the stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce (1925-1966), known for his sharp social satire that he continued despite censorship. Beyond being a critique of the system surrounding his stage performances, the film can also be seen as an attempt to understand a person in all his dimensions. With its subtle tension created by Alan Heim, its black and white cinematography that expands the possibilities of the aesthetic, and its outstanding performances, the film was nominated for six awards, including Best Picture at the Oscars, and Valerie Perrine won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
A note for attentive viewers: The voice of the interviewer in the film belongs to the director, and the director appears in the frame, albeit indistinctly, in some scenes.
