DARK WORLD, 1952.
Turkey | DCP, Black and White, 60 minutes | Turkish.
Director: Metin Erksan.
Cast: Aşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, Ayfer Feray, Kemal Bekir.
Considered both the first film by the renowned director Metin Erksan and also the first realistic portrayal of village life on film. Dark World. The book paints a personal and human portrait of the life of Aşık Veysel, a folk poet who lost his sight in childhood, tracing his journey from his early years to the development of his artistic identity.
The film, based on a screenplay by Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, was censored, cut, and reshaped, and has reached us today in a fragmented and altered form. Recently discovered footage provides new clues about the film's lost and modified aspects, while the existing copy features documentary-style segments that focus on the transition to modern agriculture, education, and healthcare in rural areas.
