İki Efendinin Uşağı-Alaturka
The classic Italian comedy by Carlo Goldoni, one of the most frequently performed plays of all time, is now being staged in a Turkish adaptation by Kıvanç Kılınç, set in 19th-century Istanbul during the Ottoman era.
While adapting the text, Kıvanç Kılınç localized the setting and characters, and, similar to rhyming plays, he used a rhyming language to create a unique rhythm specific to the play.
Muhammet Uzuner staged a performance that synthesized elements of two Mediterranean traditions of folk theater, "Commedia dell'Arte" and "Orta Oyunu," which share similarities. The costume design, original music, and dance were all seamlessly integrated with the direction, creating a cohesive whole.
We live in a world driven by self-interest, where money is valued above all else. We see fathers who disregard their children's happiness for their own gain, lovers who try to maintain their love despite unpleasant surprises, and a servant who unknowingly serves two masters, each trying to alleviate their own hunger. All this interplay of interests intertwines with the clumsy antics of Zekai Sarpasaran, a proud servant who introduces himself as the "rebellious storm of the Black Sea" (Arlecchino), transforming it all into a boisterous, "Turkish-style" comedy.
The play, which was selected for the TheatreIST Showcase Türkiye 2024 and also participated in the 31st International Theatre Festival of Sibiu in the same year, received nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor in the Comedy or Musical category at the 25th Sadri Alışık Awards.
