Akad Cast: Hülya Koçyiğit, Kerem Yılmazer, Ali Şen, Kamran Usluer, Aliye Rona, Nazan Adalı, Seden Kızıltunç, Günay Güner, Kahraman Kıral Turkey / 1973 / 88 minutes / Color / DCP / Turkish The first film in Lütfi Akad's "Migration Trilogy," *Gelin* (The Bride), tells the story of a large family migrating from Yozgat to Istanbul, and their struggle to establish themselves in the big city. While Hacı İlyas and his sons work tirelessly to expand their small shop and open a market in a wealthy neighborhood, their daughter-in-law, Meryem, fights to get her sick son the medical treatment he needs. The film, which focuses on the desire for economic prosperity and the traditional power dynamics within the family, powerfully portrays the consequences of greed and the patriarchal system. *Gelin* is one of the most compelling depictions of internal migration in Turkey and won awards at the 1973 Adana Golden Orange Film Festival.
