Social media is increasingly taking up space in our lives. While it offers many opportunities, it also raises concerns about the risks it poses, particularly for children and adolescents, as well as other social groups. The strategies employed by platforms to keep users engaged within their systems have highlighted the role of algorithms in this process. The significant influence of algorithms on which content, opinions, or individuals people encounter necessitates viewing social media not just as an artificial "virtual space," but as a hybrid space where social relationships are reproduced. This discussion will explore the reciprocal interaction between algorithmic curation and human agency within the conceptual framework of digital sociology, examining its various dimensions. The panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 7th, from 19:00 to 21:00. The panelists and discussion topics are as follows: The position of humans in a system of autonomous machines, algorithms, and images. Prof. Dr. Ali ERGUR / Department of Sociology, Galatasaray University. Algorithmic Bureaucracy. Algorithmic Bureaucracy: Calculating, Deciding, and Managing. Ph.D. Candidate Ceren TUNAY. Department of Sociology, Galatasaray University. Gang Activity and Digital Communities on TikTok. Re-emergence of Crime in the Digital Space: A Qualitative Study on New Forms of Gang Activity and Digital Communities on TikTok. Sociologist Hüseyin POLAT / Independent Researcher.
