About Trip
Behind Karşıyaka, rising majestically, is Yamanlar Mountain, the place Izmir residents look to on hot days. Nestled among pine forests, the small lake Karagöl, at an altitude of 900 meters, is a classic weekend picnic spot for Izmir residents: people leave in the morning, light a barbecue, children run around the lake, and they return in the afternoon, refreshed. It's beautiful in both summer and winter, each season offering a unique experience.
There is no direct public transportation to Karagöl; this is the biggest challenge for visitors. It's a 40-minute drive from Karşıyaka or Bornova along a mountain road. The road is paved but winding and narrow, so be prepared to give way to local drivers. It's possible to take a taxi from Karşıyaka and arrange for the driver to wait for your return. ESHOT buses go as far as Yamanlar village; from there, it's a few kilometers walk or a taxi ride to Karagöl. There is a small entrance fee per vehicle and per person at the nature park entrance.
Arrive between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM; picnic tables tend to fill up by midday on weekends, so those who arrive later may have to find a spot under a tree. The walking path around the lake is a pleasant, half-hour stroll. For those who want a longer hike, there are trails leading from the forest to the summit of Yamanlar and the village; however, the signage is limited, so download an offline map on your phone. On hot summer days, the shade of the pine trees on the upper side of the lake offers a respite from the city heat, about eight to ten degrees cooler; don't forget to bring a jacket.
Karagöl is a barbecue spot. Bring your charcoal, meat, and bread from the city; there are small kiosks in the park and the nearby village, but the selection is limited. In Yamanlar village, you can find places serving traditional Turkish breakfast and "gözleme" (a savory pancake); it's a perfect place to stop on your way back. Also, bring your water from the city.
When it snows, Karagöl becomes the quintessential postcard view of Izmir, and everyone wants to be there; however, the roads can be icy, so snow chains or winter tires are essential. Autumn is the least crowded and arguably the most beautiful season, as the forest transforms with vibrant colors.
As you drive back down to Karşıyaka on the same road, you can enjoy stunning sunset views around the curves; the entire bay stretches out beneath your feet; stop at a scenic spot and take it all in. Once you reach the bottom, you can complete your day with a treat at the local market or a walk along the seaside.
Fires are only allowed in designated barbecue areas; during the summer months, when the risk of forest fires is high, they may be completely prohibited; please follow the signs. Take your trash with you and leave the lake as beautiful as you found it for those who come after you. Cell phone reception is spotty around the lake. The lakeshore is safe for children, but swimming is prohibited.
