The other side of the Sea of Marmara is closer to Istanbul than you might think. A ferry takes just an hour to reach Yalova, and once you arrive at the pier, a further 30 minutes brings you to the town of Termal, where you'll find some of the oldest thermal baths, dating back to Roman times.

About Trip

The far shore of the Sea of Marmara is closer to İstanbul than most people assume. The ferry reaches Yalova in an hour, and half an hour inland lies Termal, where hot springs have been in use since Roman times. The small valley, spread beneath plane and chestnut trees, was a favourite of Atatürk, and his residence still stands in the grounds.

Getting there: fast ferries run from Yenikapı and Pendik throughout the day, with a car ferry on the Topçular route. Municipal buses from Yalova pier reach Termal in about half an hour and run frequently. Catch the first ferry and you can be in the water by midday.

The day: first decide which bath to use. Kurşunlu is the largest, with both indoor and outdoor pools; Valide is smaller and quieter; Sultan Banyo best preserves its historic fabric. The water comes out above forty degrees, so an hour is enough. Afterwards try the walking trail through the valley. The Atatürk residence is open as a museum and the ancient plane trees in its garden are worth the visit on their own.

Eating: options in the valley are limited to hotel restaurants. Yalova town has better fish, and the road to Çınarcık is lined with village breakfast places.

Tips: the baths fill up at weekends, so call ahead. Bring your own towel and slippers.
