“Chess” explores the encounter aboard a ship between Dr. B., who preserved his sanity through chess during Nazi torture, and the world champion Czentovic. The work profoundly reflects the destructiveness of fascism and the human psyche.
About Trip
The impossible happens and the world chess champion Mirko Czentovic loses to a stranger who has not touched a chessboard for twenty-five years. This unknown man defeats the strongest chess player in the world by a wide margin. When Dr. B., an Austrian immigrant, unexpectedly faces the chess champion on a passenger ship heading from New York to Buenos Aires, it causes great astonishment. The foreigner, who comfortably defeats his experienced opponent, begins to bleed the psychological wound that will threaten his psyche again by recounting his sad memories from the time he was arrested by the national socialists.
