About Trip
The western end of Antalya province is a completely different coast from the resort strip near the city. Kaş is small, its streets narrow, and behind it the mountain drops straight to the sea. The drive is a reason in itself; along the bends between Kalkan and Kaş the Mediterranean stays on your right.
Getting there: a hundred and ninety kilometres from Antalya, about three hours. Buses are regular, but Kaputaş needs a car since the beach sits beside the road with no stop. From the Fethiye side the distance is halved.
The day: spend the morning at Kaputaş. Some two hundred steps lead down from the road; the colour of the water comes from fresh water out of the canyon meeting the sea, and the photographs are not exaggerated. The beach is small and fills by afternoon, so arriving early is essential. Move on to Kaş after lunch. The Lycian rock tombs above the town are within walking distance of the centre, and the ancient theatre at the western exit faces the sunset. Spend the evening in the market streets.
Eating: fish and olive oil vegetable dishes lead in Kaş. Local almond paste and goat cheese are sold in the market.
Tips: the Kaputaş steps are steep and the climb back is tiring, so carry water. Roadside parking is hard to find in summer; go before nine. Staying overnight in Kaş is the most comfortable way to split the day.
