The interior of Giresun is less known than its coast, yet that is where the real production happens: hazelnut groves terraced into steep slopes, streams falling through forest and valley towns. This route joins two valleys, beginning at a waterfall and ending at a castle. Four stops, a full day.

A waterfall dropping through the forest in the Yağlıdere valley. Not tall but strong in flow, ringed by hazelnut groves; the typical Black Sea landscape gathers here. A path leads to the falls and the walk is short and easy. Families come to cool off in summer, while on weekdays it is nearly empty.

A small inland district surrounded by forest, living mainly on hazelnuts and forestry. There is no tourist arrangement here; it is a place where ordinary life continues, usually seen in passing because it lies on the roads up to the highlands. What it offers is density of green and quiet.

Crossing into the Harşit valley. A narrow valley, the river and houses clinging to the slopes; a place with a mining past.

A district wedged between steep slopes in the Harşit valley. The narrowness of the valley makes the scenery striking, with the river, bridges and houses clinging to the slopes along the road. It is a place with a mining past. One of the alternative roads up to the highlands passes through here.
4
Andoz Kalesi

Andoz Castle.

~45 min here
Andoz, Espiye/Giresun

The castle on the rock above the valley closes the route. From the top you see how the two valleys meet and open to the sea.

A castle built on a rock mass commanding the Yağlıdere valley. Its date is uncertain, placed somewhere between the Pontic and Genoese periods. The remains are modest but the position is striking: from above you see the valley, the hazelnut groves and the sea in the distance. The climb is on a steep path and takes about twenty minutes.
