This route starts at Lycian tombs, passes through a village emptied by the population exchange and descends to a lagoon and a canyon, so history, recent past and nature all fall in one day. The rock tombs sit above Fethiye, Kayaköy is fifteen kilometres inland, Ölüdeniz on the coast and Saklıkent forty kilometres east. About eighty kilometres in all, and it wants a full day. Keep the order; the cold water of Saklıkent feels like a reward at the end.

Amyntas Kaya Mezarları

Amyntas Rock Tombs.

~40 min here
Kayaköy Cad., Fethiye/Muğla

Begin the day on the cliff above town. The columned facade of the tomb of Amyntas is worked like a temple and dates from the 4th century BC. The whole gulf is visible from up here; map out your day from this point.

Cut into the rock above Fethiye, these tombs survive from ancient Telmessos and are visible from all over town. The largest, dated to the 4th century BC, is the tomb of Amyntas, its facade worked like an Ionic temple with columns and a pediment, and the inscription at its door gives the owner's name. Steps lead up; the climb is short but steep, and the whole gulf of Fethiye opens out from the top.

Kayaköy

Kayaköy, Fethiye/Muğla

Head inland to the abandoned village spread across a hillside. A Greek speaking community lived here until 1923; after the exchange it was never resettled. Walking among the roofless houses takes about an hour.

Hundreds of stone houses spread across a hillside, two churches and empty streets. Until the population exchange of 1923 a Greek speaking community lived here; afterwards the village was never resettled and remained as it was. Today you walk between roofless walls. It is a melancholy place, but unmatched in the way it tells the twentieth century of Anatolia in a single view.

Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz.

~2 h here
Ölüdeniz, Fethiye/Muğla

Descend to the coast. The lagoon is a nature park, so motorboats cannot enter and the water stays still. Paragliders launch from Babadağ above; even if you do not jump, watching the sky is part of the day.

This is the most photographed cove in Turkey and the colour of the water is not an exaggeration. The lagoon, linked to the sea by a narrow channel, is a protected nature park, so motorised craft cannot enter and the water really is still. Its status as a paragliding centre comes from Babadağ above it; jumping from two thousand metres and drifting over the bay has become the signature image of the place.

Saklıkent Kanyonu

Saklıkent Canyon.

~2 h here
Saklıkent, Seydikemer/Muğla

Forty kilometres east. You enter the cleft, whose walls reach four hundred metres in places, on a wooden walkway and then wade through ice cold water. It stays cool even in summer, which makes it the right place to end.

A cleft eighteen kilometres long with walls that rise to four hundred metres in places. The first stretch is crossed on a wooden walkway, after which you wade into ice cold water; even in summer it is cold enough to take your breath. The full canyon requires technical climbing, so visitors walk the first few kilometres. It stays cool inside even in midsummer, which makes it the right escape from the Aegean heat.
