The Highlands of Denizli from Buldan to Honaz
Sign in to like and rate
It is easy to think Denizli is only Pamukkale, yet the north of the province is full of weaving towns and vineyards, and the south holds the highest mountain in the Aegean. This route climbs from plain to highland: a town where looms still work inside the houses, an ancient city with almost no visitors, a district known for its vines, and finally a mountain of two and a half thousand metres. Four stops, a full day, and a car is essential.
Route Stops

Buldan.
A town known for weaving. Buldan cloth carries a geographical indication and looms still work inside the houses. The two storey timber houses of the old quarters survive, and you can buy directly from the makers in the market.

Tripolis Ancient City.
On the Buldan road at a point commanding the plain. Founded where the borders of Lydia, Caria and Phrygia met; the rows of shops along the colonnaded street are well preserved. Visitors are almost absent.

Çal.
Northeast, into the vineyards. The Çal karası grape is native here and some boutique producers are open to visitors. Stone houses and old fountains survive in the villages; the harvest is in September.

Honaz Mountain National Park.
Turn south to the foot of the highest mountain in the Aegean. The summit stands at two thousand five hundred and seventy metres and wants a full day, but the marked short trails at its foot are enough to close this one.
