Ankara's kitchen is unshowy, but it sends you home full and happy. This route starts at lunchtime with Ankara tava in the tradesmen's restaurants of Ulus, digests over tea in Suluhan, continues with menengiç coffee in Hamamönü, pauses for coffee on Tunalı in the late afternoon and ends the night at Kızılay's fish-sandwich stalls. Every walk in between makes room for the next meal. Do not forget to pick up Beypazarı kurusu from a regional produce shop in Ulus to nibble along the way.

1
Ulus Esnaf Lokantaları (Ankara Tava)

Ulus Local Restaurants (Ankara Style)

~1 h here
Denizciler Caddesi ve Ulus çarşıları, Altındağ

Arrive at twelve sharp and order Ankara tava and kapama; the trays are gone by two and nobody gets one set aside.

Ankara's food culture is slow-cooked pot food, and its best version is eaten in the tradesmen's restaurants of Ulus. Ankara tava, lamb baked with orzo, then kapama, dried beans and the milk dessert höşmerim to finish. The trays leave the oven around eleven and are gone by two in the afternoon; you share a table with the civil servant beside you and nobody minds. The long-standing places on Denizciler Street and the lanes off Anafartalar are the safest place to start.
2
Suluhan Çarşısı

Suluhan Bazaar.

~30 min here
Tenekeciler Sokak, Ulus, Altındağ

Sit at the tea stall in the courtyard and digest; buy lokum and roasted chickpeas from the han's shops, you will want them later.

Step a few paces off the bustle of Anafartalar Street and you find yourself in the twin-courtyard stone han that Hasan Paşa built in 1508–1511. It has traded without a break for five hundred years and takes its name from being the only han of its day with running water and heating. Today the courtyards hold jewellers, florists, wedding-favour shops and handmade gifts. A perfect pause in the middle of an Ulus walk.
3
Hamamönü

Hamamönü.

~1 h here
Hacettepe Mahallesi, Hamamönü, Altındağ

Fifteen minutes uphill; menengiç coffee and a warm Ankara simit in a courtyard cafe. Try the lanes behind the cafes too.

This is Ankara's most photogenic quarter; Ottoman-era houses restored in the 2000s, narrow lanes and courtyard cafes await you. The Taceddin lodge where Mehmet Akif Ersoy wrote the national anthem, the poet's museum house, the Karacabey bath and small craft workshops are the main stops. There are dozens of breakfast and gözleme places along the street at similar prices. Ramadan evenings and weekends get very crowded; if you want quiet, choose a weekday morning.
4
Sakarya Caddesi ve Kızılay Sokakları

Sakarya Street and Kızılay Street.

~1 h here
Sakarya Caddesi, Kızılay, Çankaya

Take the metro to Kızılay. Eat your fish sandwich or kokoreç standing up and drink your tea sitting down; sharing a table is perfectly normal here.

Pedestrianised Sakarya Street and the Selanik, Bayındır and Tuna streets that open onto it form Ankara's cheapest and most crowded eating district. Fish sandwiches, kokoreç, mussels, wet burgers and endless tea. In the evening students, civil servants and musicians mix in the same street, and long-standing music bars such as Nefes are here. No tourist polish; this is the city's everyday self, and that is exactly why people love it.
5
Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi

Tunalı Hilmi Avenue.

~45 min here
Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi, Kavaklıdere, Çankaya

Walk down the boulevard; a break at a third-wave coffee shop and Ankara's classic profiterole at a patisserie. Yes, you can manage one more.

Running from Kızılay down to Kuğulu Park, Tunalı Hilmi is Ankara's best-known shopping and cafe street. The real life is in the side streets; Bestekar, Tunus and Bülten line up restaurants, pubs and live-music venues. Window shopping by day, coffee at dusk, bars at night; one axis covers every hour. Being close to the embassies, it is where foreign visitors feel most at ease, and English menus are easy to find.
6
Kuğulu Park

Swan Park: Ankara's Peace Stop

~30 min here
Çankaya, Kuğulu Park, Çankaya/Ankara, Türkiye

Finish the coffee in the park watching the swans; the meyhanes of Bestekar Street are right behind you for the evening.

One of the most popular green spaces in the capital Ankara, Kuğulu Park is an essential stop for those who want to connect with nature in the midst of city life. Located in the Kavaklıdere neighborhood, right next to Tunalı Hilmi Street, this charming park is one of the favorite relaxation spots for Ankarans, especially known for its tranquil atmosphere, the pond famous for its swans, and lush green areas.

Named after the white and black swans, ducks, and geese that inhabit it, Kuğulu Park has been welcoming visitors for years with its nature-friendly structure. The park's pond offers a natural habitat where these elegant birds glide and swim, while the surrounding walking paths and benches provide visitors with a peaceful resting opportunity.

Opened in the 1960s, Kuğulu Park has gradually become one of Ankara's most beloved parks. Especially in the spring and summer months, it is filled with people sitting in the shade of trees reading books, taking photos, and enjoying pleasant moments with their loved ones. The cafes and restaurants around it also complement the vibrant atmosphere of the area.
