Balat–Fener Neighbourhood Walk

A 4 km walk on the western shore of the Golden Horn from the Greek houses of Fener to the colourful lanes of Balat, then up to Chora inside the land walls. Patriarchate, the Red School, the Iron Church, antique shops, breakfast cafés and, at the last stop, the finest Byzantine mosaics. The slopes are steep but every corner is a photograph; have breakfast in Balat and end at Chora.

Five minutes from Fener pier to the Patriarchate; visit the Church of St George quietly.
The spiritual centre of the Orthodox world has been based in Fener since the 1600s. The Church of St George inside the compound looks modest from outside but impresses with its gilded iconostasis and icons surviving from Byzantine times. The visit is short but gives the Balat-Fener walk its meaning.

Fener (The area around the "Red School")

Climb Sancaktar Slope to the front of the Red School; photograph it with the Golden Horn behind you.
Fener is the quarter around the Patriarchate where the Greek community has lived since Byzantine times. On its crest, the red-brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College (the Red School) of 1881 is visible from all along the Golden Horn and still functions as a school. Climbing its steep lanes rewards you with a wide view.

Ten minutes towards Çarşamba; see the mosaic chapel if open, otherwise admire the brickwork outside.
In the Çarşamba quarter above Fener, this 13th–14th-century church housed the Patriarchate for a time after 1453. The gold-ground mosaics in its side chapel are the best-preserved Byzantine mosaics in the city after Chora. It is the natural stop on the walk between Chora and Fener.

Head down to Vodina Street for a late breakfast. Then lose an hour among the streets of coloured houses and the antique shops.
Climbing the western shore of the Golden Horn, Balat has become Istanbul's most photographed neighbourhood thanks to its brightly painted bay-windowed houses, antique shops and cafés. Traces of its Jewish, Greek and Armenian communities survive in synagogues, churches and old school buildings. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep lanes; exploring takes about two hours.

See the synagogue on Kürkçüçeşme Street from outside; if you have an appointment, the boat-shaped teva.
Balat's oldest synagogue is believed to have been founded in the 15th century by Jews from Ohrid. Its boat-prow-shaped teva (pulpit) is unique. For security reasons entry is only with advance permission, but even seen from outside it is a key stop for understanding the neighbourhood's multi-faith past.

St. Stephen Bulgarian Church (also known as the Iron Church).

Drop to the shore for the Iron Church; a 15-minute pause in its garden facing the water.
Completed in 1898 on the Golden Horn shore, this church is a rare example of prefabricated cast-iron architecture: the parts were cast in Vienna, shipped and assembled on site. A 2018 restoration brought back the shine of both facade and interior. Its small garden faces the water; a 20-minute stop.

Kariye Mosque (Chora)

A 25-minute climb or bus towards Edirnekapı; crown the walk with the mosaics and frescoes.
Just inside the land walls, the former Chora Monastery church holds mosaics and frescoes from the early 14th century, the last great flowering of Byzantine art. The narthex mosaics of the lives of Christ and Mary and the Anastasis fresco in the side chapel are world famous. Reopened as a mosque in 2024 after restoration; allow 45 minutes.
