Mustafa Kemal Pasha said, “Gather your battalion immediately; you will come under the command of the Western Front, move out!” The locomotive of the train that was to take us to the front could not operate because of a shortage of coal and could not build up steam. I had the willow trees at Ankara station cut down and burned them in the locomotive’s boiler, transporting the battalion to the front in a single night. We arrived in Eskişehir and immediately went to the front and engaged in battle. We won the battle. This was the victory of the Western Front Command. The enemy retreated from Kazancı Hill toward Bursa. After that, we returned to Ankara. The Guard Battalion had entered combat for the first time and had become one of the units that won the battle.
