On the 100th anniversary of our republic, Büyükdere Nursery was presented to the people of Istanbul under the name “Büyükdere Atatürk Nursery.” This is an important development in terms of protecting one of Istanbul’s last remaining natural areas and passing it on to future generations.
Established in 1928 on Atatürk’s orders, Büyükdere Nursery is Turkey’s first fruit orchard and nursery. The nursery was developed by drawing on Italian horticultural expertise and made a major contribution to Istanbul’s afforestation efforts over the years. At the nursery, which began operating in 1930, breeding studies were conducted on fruit varieties brought from within Turkey and abroad, and the fruit saplings obtained as a result were distributed to the public. The nursery also provided training and consulting services on fruit cultivation.
