Istanbul is a major crossroads, not only for its commercial and strategic importance, but also a place where countless human stories intertwine and converge. It is the cultural and artistic capital of both the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. Countless writers, painters, sculptors, actors in theater, television, and film, and numerous composers and musicians have walked its streets. They have all touched our lives in some way. Some shone brightly for a moment, like a fleeting star, while others lived long lives before passing away and finding rest in the embrace of Istanbul.
Istanbul boasts numerous cemeteries, each with a rich history and cultural significance, scattered across different districts from Çatalca to Tuzla, where various religions are represented. When we visit these places to pay respects to loved ones, we often come across familiar names. We encounter the tombstones of some of Turkey's greatest artists, often located near the graves of those we cherish. Some of these cemeteries are well-maintained and frequently visited by admirers, while others are neglected and forgotten.
Photographer Atilla Alp Bölükbaşı is dedicated to documenting the graves of these individuals throughout Istanbul. In his quest to create a visual record of history, he has documented the graves of nearly 600 people, providing them with interesting and biographical information.
"Timeless Treasures" is both a highly significant archival project and something that enriches all of our lives.
This work is a tribute to these names. We believe that this project, which invites everyone on an educational and enlightening journey through time, will become a fundamental reference source over time.
