Zeyrek Tile-Covered Bathhouse.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
A double bath in Zeyrek commissioned by Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, grand admiral of the Ottoman fleet, and designed by Mimar Sinan; the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam dates it to around 1540-1546. It takes its name from the blue and white İznik tiles that once lined its walls, most of which were removed and sold in the 19th century and scattered among European museums. A thirteen-year restoration uncovered thousands of tile fragments and Byzantine cisterns beneath the changing halls. It reopened in 2023 with a museum next door and has also worked as a bath since 2024.
