Yedikule Bostanları

Historic market gardens around Yedikule, near the land walls, that have been cultivated for centuries. According to 18th-century records, in 1733 there were 77 gardens along the walls from Yedikule to Ayvansaray, and they played an important part in feeding the city. Their best-known product is Yedikule lettuce, known for its soft, oily leaves. The area lies in the Land Walls Conservation Area within the Historic Areas of Istanbul on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Fatih Municipality is running a project with the gardeners to protect the gardens' historic character and holds events such as harvests at its Yedikule Bahçe garden. The gardens are working farmland; do not enter without permission.
