About Venue
A rock sanctuary two kilometres north-east of the Hittite capital Hattusa, two roofless chambers among natural outcrops; of the temple buildings in front only foundations remain. Most of the reliefs were made in the late 13th century BC under Tudhaliya IV and Suppiluliuma II. In Chamber A more than sixty deities walk in procession, male gods on the left wall and goddesses on the right, meeting on the end wall where the Storm God Teshub faces the Sun Goddess Hepat. Chamber B, entered through a narrow passage, holds the twelve underworld gods, the Sword God and the famous relief of Sharruma embracing Tudhaliya IV; the chamber is thought to be a mausoleum or memorial for Tudhaliya. With Hattusa it has been a World Heritage Site since 1986.
