Altındağ, Ankara

About Venue

One of the most striking historical structures in Ankara, Ulucanlar Prison has witnessed Turkey's political and literary history for many years and is now open to visitors as a museum. Established in 1925 and used as a prison until 2006, this building is known for being a place where many famous politicians, writers, journalists, and thinkers were held.

The prison has hosted important figures in the past, such as Nazım Hikmet, Bülent Ecevit, Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan, Hüseyin İnan, Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu, and Adnan Menderes. Particularly, the presence of political prisoners and those held for thought crimes has increased the historical significance of Ulucanlar Prison.

Today, serving as a museum, Ulucanlar Prison preserves its old wards, cells, courtyards, and the gallows, allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of the era. The personal belongings, letters, photographs, and memories of the prisoners are exhibited within the museum, showcasing the experiences that took place in the prison's past.

Visitors to the museum can learn about the stories of the prisoners here in detail through audio guides and information panels. The cold walls, iron doors, and narrow corridors of the prison provide an experience that carries the traces of the past into the present, leaving a lasting impression.
