Tophane-i Amire Kültür ve Sanat Merkezi

The historic foundry in Tophane where cannons were cast for the Ottoman army and navy. Mehmed the Conqueror set up a cannon foundry here after the conquest, and it was renewed under Süleyman the Magnificent; according to the sources the present building was rebuilt in 1743. After an iron works was set up in Zeytinburnu in 1843 and reached full capacity in 1850, cannon casting gradually moved away. In 1992 the building was handed over to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and began to be used as a culture and art centre. Its three halls, the Five Domes, the Single Dome and the Cisterns, host Turkish and international exhibitions as well as shows by students and faculty; the programme changes from season to season.
