The Ruins of the Theodosius Forum.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
Huge marble fragments laid out along Ordu Caddesi at Beyazıt. They belong to the three-passage triumphal arch of the square founded under Constantine as the Forum Tauri and rebuilt by Theodosius I in 393 on the model of Trajan's Forum in Rome. The column shafts of the arch's piers, carved to resemble the club of Hercules, can still be seen. The pieces came to light during the redevelopment of the street and square between 1948 and 1961. Carved fragments of the forum's Column of Theodosius were built into the foundations of the Bayezid II bath opposite.
