About Venue
Standing on Hipodrom Street, just northwest of Ankara Station, the headquarters of the Turkish State Railways is a public building designed by architect Bedri Uçar, begun in 1939 and completed in 1941. Its reinforced concrete body is clad in stone and carries simplified classical details, which makes it one of the earliest examples of the Second National Architecture movement. A courtyard sits at the centre, surrounded by four-storey wings; the wings were added in 1958, 1974 and 1979, and a conference hall in 1986. The building still serves as the railway headquarters and is not open to visitors, but its facade is easily viewed from the station square and the street. The THK Parachute Tower stands opposite, and Ankara Station is a few steps away.
