Air Force Martyrs Memorial.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
A monument in Fatih Park at Saraçhanebaşı, also called the Air Martyrs' Monument. It was built for Fethi, Sadık and Nuri, remembered as the first airmen to lose their lives in Turkish aviation history; they died shortly before the First World War on a flight they had hoped to make from Istanbul to Cairo. Designed by Vedat Tek, it was begun in 1914 and completed in 1916. The broken column on its marble base symbolises the unfinished flight; a bronze laurel branch crowns it, and enlarged copies of the medal the airmen were to receive flank the base.
