About Venue
The 1592 mosque of a small complex outside the Topkapı walls, next to the Topkapı cemetery. The complex also has a well, two sebils, a graveyard, a building thought to have been a primary school and the Derviş Mehmed Pasha Fountain added in 1819; the earliest building is the sebil of 1578. The mosque is known for late 16th-century İznik tiles that cover the four walls of the prayer hall from the skirting up to the upper windows. Arranged in eleven rectangular panels, they show coral red alongside green, blue, navy and white; missing tiles from one panel are in the Gulbenkian collection in Lisbon. It also has a tiled mihrab, a marble minbar and an original interlocking wooden door. It was thoroughly restored in 2005.
