About Venue

One of the most impressive historical structures in Istanbul, Rumeli Fortress, is an open-air museum that takes its visitors back in time with its majestic silhouette rising on the shores of the Bosphorus. Built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1452, before the conquest of Istanbul, this magnificent fortress is considered one of the most important works of Ottoman military architecture. Constructed in just four months, Rumeli Fortress played a significant role in the conquest of Istanbul due to its strategic location.

The Magnificent Fortress Prepared for the Conquest of Istanbul

Fatih Sultan Mehmet had this fortress built at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus to cut off aid to Byzantium coming from the Black Sea. Along with the Anadolu Fortress directly opposite, it is one of the key points in the plan to besiege Istanbul, controlling the sea routes to Byzantium under Ottoman control. With its three large towers and thick walls dominating the Bosphorus, the fortress is one of the most important structures showcasing Ottoman military genius.

The Intersection of Architecture and Landscape

One of the most striking features of the fortress is its three large towers built by the viziers of Fatih Sultan Mehmet and its strong walls. The towers of Zaganos Pasha, Halil Pasha, and Saruca Pasha are the most important elements that enhance the defensive power of the structure. The high walls and towers facing the sea offer a wonderful viewpoint to see the unique landscape of the Bosphorus.

Today’s Open-Air Museum and Event Space

Today, Rumeli Fortress welcomes its visitors as an open-air museum. Inside the fortress, it is possible to explore historical cannons, remnants of ancient structures, and walls from the Ottoman period. Additionally, the open-air theater within the fortress attracts art lovers with concerts and events held during the summer months.

An Unforgettable Journey on the Historical Walls of the Bosphorus

Rumeli Fortress is an indispensable route for history enthusiasts, those who love walking in nature, and anyone wanting to see one of the most beautiful views of Istanbul. Climbing to the high points of the fortress to watch the Bosphorus, walking through the historical texture to journey back to the Ottoman period, and experiencing a peaceful moment by the sea offers an unforgettable experience for everyone visiting here.
