Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque.
Üsküdar, İstanbul
About Venue
Standing on the ridge above the Şemsi Paşa Mosque in Üsküdar, in the quarter named after it, this mosque was built by Rum Mehmed Paşa, who briefly served as grand vizier under Mehmed II. The inscription over its door gives the year 876, that is 1471-72. It belongs to the group of mosques with side rooms and has an inverted T plan, with the central dome supported by a half dome towards the mihrab. Its brickwork, undulating eaves and round dome drum recall Byzantine religious architecture. Of the original complex only the mosque and the octagonal tomb on the qibla side survive. It is a working neighbourhood mosque.
