About Venue
A mosque in Kasımpaşa built by the grand admiral Piyale Pasha and completed in 1573; it is also known as the Tersane (Shipyard) Mosque. Wikipedia names Mimar Sinan as its architect. Instead of one great dome it is covered by six equal domes about 9 metres across in two rows of three, and with its two-storey side galleries and a minaret rising in the middle of the entrance front on the mihrab axis it has a plan rarely seen in Istanbul. The mihrab is clad in İznik tiles with floral compositions. The band of white monumental thuluth on a deep blue ground around the west, south and north walls is by Hasan Çelebi, a pupil of Karahisari. The rest of the complex is lost; the mosque and Piyale Pasha's octagonal tomb survive.
