Fatih, İstanbul

About Venue

The gate of the Marmara walls closest to the land walls, the first gate in the shore walls after Yedikule. Eremya Çelebi Kömürciyan links its name to the pomegranate trees that once grew around it. It was also called Bab-ı Atik, the old gate, in Ottoman times, and according to the inscription on the neighbouring tower it is said to date from the reign of the Byzantine emperor Manuel Komnenos (1143-1180). It lies behind the old Yedikule railway station. Inscribed marble blocks found during clearance work can be seen on the green area in front of it. Close access to its faces is limited; it is seen from the surrounding streets and the shore side.
