About Venue
Standing in Zafer Square on Atatürk Boulevard, in front of the Officers' Club, this monument is the second Ankara commission of the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica and counts as the fourth monument of the Republic. It was unveiled on 4 November 1927, the same day as the equestrian statue at the Ethnography Museum, in the presence of Prime Minister İsmet İnönü; the square took its name that day. Atatürk stands in a marshal's uniform, both hands on the hilt of his sword, facing south towards Kızılay and Çankaya. The bronze statue is 1.75 metres and the marble pedestal on four steps is 2 metres; victory wreaths and torches are carved on the sides of the base, which carries no inscription. After the 1980s the square shrank with boulevard widening; today the monument sits on a narrow green island where wreaths are laid on national holidays. It was restored in 2022. The Kızılay metro station is a few minutes away.
