About Venue
Maltepe Mosque stands on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard on the ridge east of Anıtkabir, a few steps from Maltepe station on the Ankaray line. It was built between 1954 and 1959 by an association founded in 1950; the architect was Recai Akçay and the structural engineer Mehmet Varlıer. Built of cut stone with a single dome and two minarets, it looks like a classical Ottoman mosque but is a modern building finished in the late 1950s, and counts as the first large mosque of Republican Ankara. The square prayer hall is lit by many stained-glass windows, the Fatiha crowns the dome, Kütahya tiles cover the walls up to five metres and five small domes roof the northern courtyard. The dome is thirty metres high outside, the minarets fifty. Together with Kocatepe it is among the city's best known mosques.
