Kumkapı and the Fish Market.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
A quarter on the Marmara shore of the historic peninsula, named after the Kum Gate in the sea walls. Its Byzantine name was Kontoskalion, the small harbour, and the harbour here was rebuilt in 1263. After the conquest it remained a crowded shore neighbourhood; Karamani Mehmed Paşa's mosque in Kumkapı was built in 1465. Today the quarter is known for its fishermen: the Kumkapı fish market, which ended up in the Eurasia Tunnel construction site, was rebuilt by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and 25 fishmongers were resettled. The fishing season runs from September to May, but thanks to line fishing the market is open all year.
