Kıztaşı (Markianos Column)
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
A Roman monumental column standing in the square at the southern end of Kıztaşı Caddesi in Fatih, which gave the neighbourhood its name. It was erected between 450 and 452 by the city prefect Tatianus in honour of Emperor Marcian. The shaft, about 17 metres high, is of reddish-grey Egyptian granite; the marble-faced base carries a Latin dedication on one face and winged figures holding a globe on another, which gave the column its popular name, the maiden's stone. An imperial statue once stood on its Corinthian capital with eagles.
