Karacabey Hamamı

The double bath that gave Hamamönü its name, on Talatpaşa Bulvarı. It bears no inscription; according to an endowment deed of 1444 it was built by Karaca Bey, governor-general of Anatolia under Murad II, before he fell at Varna that year, and its income was endowed to his soup-kitchen mosque at Hacet Tepesi. Sources place its construction between 1427-28 and 1440-41. The men's section is entered by the south door on the street, the women's by a west door; the dressing halls have mud-brick walls and pyramidal roofs with lanterns, the men's hot room follows a four-iwan plan around an octagonal marble platform with muqarnas transitions to the domes.
