Sultan Suleiman Bridge (in Büyükçekmece).
Büyükçekmece, İstanbul
About Venue
Mimar Sinan's bridge on the old road to the Balkans, where Lake Büyükçekmece opens into the Marmara. It was begun on the orders of Süleyman the Magnificent and completed after his death by Selim II; the inscriptions give the completion date as 975 (1567-68). Made of four sections joined by artificial islets, the bridge is about 636 metres long, a little over 7 metres wide and has 28 arches. The words amel-i Yusuf b. Abdullah in the inscription kiosk are, according to the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, the only known signature of Sinan on any of his works. Main traffic now uses a modern bridge nearby.
