Şişli, İstanbul
About Venue
An open-air theatre in the Dolmabahçe valley in Harbiye, a semicircle of stepped seating facing a flat stage. It was part of Henri Prost's 1930s city plan for Istanbul and was designed by Nihat Yücel and Nahit Uysal; its foundations were laid in 1946 and it opened on 9 August 1947. The stage took its final form on the advice of Carl Ebert. The first production was Sophocles' Oedipus the King. In 1958 it was named after the former mayor Cemil Topuzlu. The facades use limestone and Uzunköprü stone, and it seats around 4,000. Today it is one of the city's best-known summer concert venues; check the season programme on kultur.istanbul.
