Gavurkale (literally "Infidel Fortress" or "Fortress of the Infidels")
Dereköy mahallesi, Haymana'ya 12 km
Haymana, Ankara
About Venue
Sixty kilometres south-west of Ankara, twelve from Haymana, two north-west of Dereköy: a rocky hill rising sixty metres above the Babayakup stream. Three figures in Hittite style are carved into a flattened rock face on the south side of the summit: two male gods striding left in horned headdresses and short tunics, swords at their belts, and facing them a small seated goddess in a pointed headdress. Above the reliefs stand a cyclopean wall and, behind it, a stone chamber of debated purpose; no inscription was found. The hill was used in Hittite and Phrygian times. H. H. von der Osten of the University of Chicago dug here in 1930 at Atatürk's wish; Bilkent University surveyed it in 1993-1998. In 2021 the municipality announced a road, fencing and lighting project.
