About Venue
Direkli Mosque, at the corner of Direkli Street and Ceylan Street in Kale neighbourhood on the Ulucanlar side of the old town, takes its name from the five wooden posts that carry its entrance porch. It has no inscription; the style of its moulded plaster mihrab dates it to the 15th century, and foundation records show it was renewed in the 18th. It is a plain rectangular neighbourhood mosque of mudbrick with timber ties on a base of Ankara stone, under a tiled roof, with half marble columns from antiquity flanking the door and a zinc-capped wooden minaret at the north-east corner. Inside, a wooden women's gallery and a muqarnas-hooded mihrab rising to the ceiling stand out. It was restored in 2007 and may be closed outside prayer times.
