Üsküdar, İstanbul
About Venue
On Çinili Mescid Street in the Murat Reis quarter of Üsküdar, this mosque is the centre of a complex built in 1640 by Kösem Mahpeyker Valide Sultan. Its architect is thought to have been the chief court architect Kasım Ağa. The square, single-domed prayer hall is tiled from the floor up to the upper windows, mihrab included, with peonies, tulips and hyacinths in blue, turquoise and green on a white ground. The conical cap of the marble minbar is tiled too. The complex also includes a madrasa, a sebil, an ablution fountain, a double bath, a primary school and a fountain. It is a working mosque.
