Çemberlitaş (Constantine's Column)
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
The Column of Constantine, rising at Çemberlitaş on Divanyolu and dedicated on 11 May 330. Set up in the middle of the Forum of Constantine, it is the only structure of that forum to survive. Its shaft of Egyptian porphyry drums stands on a white marble base and is now 34.8 metres high. The statue of Constantine on top and the three uppermost drums were brought down by a storm in 1106. In the Ottoman period, iron hoops around the shaft gave it the name Çemberlitaş, and after a fire in 1779 blackened it, it also became known as the Burnt Column.
