Çemberlitaş Bathhouse.

Fatih, İstanbul

About Venue

A double bath on Divanyolu, right next to the Çemberlitaş Column. It was commissioned in 1584 by Nurbanu Sultan, wife of Selim II and mother of Murad III, and its income went to the Atik Valide complex in Üsküdar. It is usually attributed to Mimar Sinan, although the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam notes that it is missing from the lists of his works. Its twelve-sided hot room with a ring of twelve columns is the most original part. Part of the changing hall was cut away when Divanyolu was widened in 1868, and the women's section was given over to other uses. It still works as a bath.
