About Venue
The Mecidiye Pavilion at Yalıköy in Beykoz, on the shore historically called Hünkar İskelesi, was begun in 1845 by Kavalalı Mehmed Ali Paşa, governor of Egypt, as a gift for Sultan Abdülmecid, and completed in 1854 by his son Said Paşa. The two-storey, symmetrical pavilion with a neoclassical facade sits at the top of a terraced garden rising from the sea. Stone imported from Italy and local white marble were used outside, coloured porphyry inside. Used as an orphanage, a sanatorium and a hospital in the 20th century, it opened as a museum in 2017 after restoration by the National Palaces administration. It is closed on Mondays.
