Bakırköy, İstanbul

About Venue

The Baruthane-i Amire on the Ataköy shore is the Ottoman gunpowder works founded outside the city after the powder mill at Şehremini exploded in 1698; it began production in 1701. Rebuilt several times after fires and accidents, and in masonry after 1791, it switched to smokeless powder in 1896. In the Republican era it belonged to the military factories, and its grounds became housing in the 1950s. The magazines, guard tower, fountain and the Baruthane Tower from the reign of Selim III that survive on the shore were restored by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and opened on 9 January 2024 as a public space with a library, a museum and a viewing terrace. Closed on Mondays.
