Arcadius Column Base.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
A massive stone base standing among houses on Haseki Kadın Sokağı in Cerrahpaşa. It belonged to the triumphal column begun after 401 to celebrate Emperor Arcadius's suppression of the Gothic revolt led by Gainas, and completed in 421. The column rose in the middle of the Forum of Arcadius on the city's seventh hill; its shaft was covered with spiral bands of relief and had a staircase inside leading to the top. It was pulled down in the early 18th century, leaving the base and lower section, about 11 metres high. It is also known locally as Avrat Taşı.
