About Venue
The Roman Theatre of Ankara is a Roman period theatre on the north-western slope of Ankara Castle facing Bentderesi, above Hisarparkı Avenue. It came to light during foundation digging in 1982, was excavated between 1982 and 1986 by the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Ankara University, and was listed as a protected site in 1992. Its exact date is unknown; sources place it between the first and second centuries AD. The semicircular cavea leaning on the slope, the vaulted passages, the orchestra 12 to 13 metres across and the five door stage building regarded as an Anatolian trait are built of andesite; capacity is estimated at three to five thousand. Restored by the Metropolitan Municipality and laid out as an archaeopark, it opened to visitors on 8 June 2025. The excavation finds are in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
